In today’s Poppy Seed post, Shannon shares her plan for 2012: learning how to maintain a healthier lifestyle by committing to the journey, not an end result. You got this, Shannon.
Hello, all. My name is Shannon and I am one of the Poppy Seeds!
I’ve been a fan of this blog since its creation, looking to Suban for inspiration as I, too, embark upon a journey of self-discovery, a healthier lifestyle and fully recognizing my beauty- inside and out.
When it was decided that I would become a regular contributor, I could not have been more ecstatic. See, like Suban, I wanted to share my struggles, my achievements, and my thoughts along the way to a healthier lifestyle. I want to be held accountable. Not necessarily for my progress of achieving a set goal at the end of this “journey,” but rather for my commitment to never lose sight of the fact that this is in fact a lifelong journey. A journey that I fully commit to be present within, and of which I hope to learn many things about myself along the way.
This is not my first time embarking upon a commitment to live a healthier lifestyle. I have struggled with body confidence all of my life. Looking back on my high school years, I cannot even believe that I had such low self esteem. I can look back and see a young, skinny, beautiful teenager, but in my eyes I was fat. I would never be pretty enough.
Throughout the next decade I gained weight and longed for the body of my high school years, the body I was so ashamed of. I have learned many things throughout the past ten years, discovered my passions in life, and learned to truly love my body, mind and spirit.
However, the one thing I have not learned is how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. How to not “diet” for weight loss, but rather to create new habits to incorporate into my life, leading to feeling better physically, and yes, dropping some pounds. While I have been unable to grasp this concept for the past 27 years, I am learning not to get down on myself for that- for each day is an opportunity for a fresh start and I am starting 2012 with you all.
So cheers to the new year ahead and being a part of my journey! I am sure there are going to be many great things to come of this and I am very much looking forward to sharing them all with you.
